of the founder Joseph Isaac Asscher. Joseph Isaac Asscher already had a reputation as a skilled diamond cutter and craftsman. He passed his skills to his two children. Joseph and Abraham became two of the foremost diamond experts in fin de siècle Europe. The company eventually came to be known as the Asscher Diamond Company. Today, the word Asscher retains the same cachet as it did in the early twentieth century. Having been through two world wars that devastated Europe and – for a brief period – tragically more than decimated the company in terms of its manpower – the company is still headquartered at its original Amsterdam location, where it stood more than a century and a half ago.

The original Asscher cut was designed by Joseph in 1902. The innovative cut was actually patented. The patent had run its course by the dawning of the Second World War, but the popularity of this beautifully cut diamond up until then proved extremely popular. The reputation of the Asscher family was so great that they were often consulted about and employed when it came to the cleaving of large diamonds that were discovered at the turn of the century. The 1903 Excelsior diamond was one such find. It was the largest diamond ever discovered at 997 carats.

This record was smashed in 1907 with the discovery of the Cullinan diamond at more than three times this size. King Edward VII of the United Kingdom invited the Asschers to London.

Both the Excelsior and Cullinan diamonds were cleaved by the Asschers. The Asschers brought an expertise to the job, minimizing the flaws in the gems and deciding how to divide the large gemstones because of the inclusions in the jewels.
